The approach to our PSHE curriculum is as follows:

• We use a clear and comprehensive scheme of work (Jigsaw) in line with the National Curriculum with clear links made to British Values, Protected Characteristics, SMSC and our school’s core values from EYFS to Year 6.
• As a school, we highlight numerous key national campaigns throughout the year including Anti-Bullying Week, Road Safety, Odd Socks and Internet Safety Day.
• Our PSHE curriculum supports the day-to-day experiences of our children in school and challenges of growing up: we encourage safe and understanding discussions about issues that may occur and refer to strategies learned to help self-manage behaviour and feelings.
• Each class has a ‘JIGSAW Charter’ on display in the classroom and the children are aware of the core values of the classroom being a safe place to share their opinions and views.
• Whole school assemblies make relevant links to PSHE and allow for emerging issues to be dealt with (that may not fit into the current theme of the PSHE lessons), brought to the attention of the children and dealt in respectful, caring manner.
• All classes throughout school maintain a class portfolio to evidence the children’s learning and discussions. These journals contain evidence of ‘Pupil Voice’ - something we believe is extremely important within our school community.
• Children are encouraged to volunteer for jobs within the school in a wide range of roles, e.g. House Captain, School Council representatives and Playground Leaders.

At Lutton St Nicholas Primary Academy, we have developed our PSHE curriculum to ensure that by the time that the children leave us in Year 6, they are resilient young adults who are determined, have a developed understanding of how to stay safe, including E-Safety, healthy and develop good relationships; to have an appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society and to have a strong self-awareness, interlinked with compassion of others. Skills and knowledge are built on year on year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children and the use of class portfolios allow us, as a school, to ensure consistency in year groups and progression throughout the school whilst continuing to ensure that teachers are aware of the discussions and learning that has taken place in previous year groups.

Our PHSE curriculum follows six half-termly themes that run throughout the school from EYFS to Y6 and has been designed to build resilience and determination.
