Lutton St Nicholas Primary Academy

We aim to provide children with a literacy-rich environment, high quality texts and inspiring learning opportunities, which will help them to achieve their very best during their years in primary and beyond. Reading is a vital skill that opens up a world of opportunities for children, both in terms of developing their imagination and providing the necessary skills for pupils to eventually follow their dreams and goals.
At our school, this journey does not just begin and end with phonics but through the provision of structured whole-class guided reading sessions and through the provision of an environment that encourages pupils to develop a love of reading. As a school we wish of pupils to:

Through the delivery of our reading curriculum, we ensure a consistent and robust teaching and learning of early reading and phonics in FS and KS1, so that pupils are able to read with increased speed and fluency and access the wider curriculum. This is achieved through the use of our Little Wandle phonics scheme which provides a clear framework for the teaching of phonics. Our reading, in addition to phonics and whole-class sessions, is also supported by our reading spine which provides pupils with a range of exciting books which act as a stimulus in reading and writing.

Ultimately, our aim is to provide a text rich environment, one that creates a positive culture towards reading throughout all classes and promotes reading for pleasure.  Children enjoy listening to challenging texts through Storytime. Through high quality teaching and learning experiences we will develop children’s skills and competence so that they are fluent readers who can read to learn.  We ask that any adult that works with a child holds the same high expectations and encourages pupils to read whenever possible.
