At Lutton St Nicholas Primary Academy, we believe that Religious Education plays a significant role in the development of pupils’ spiritual, social, cultural and moral character. We firmly believe that our RE curriculum promotes respect, tolerance and acceptance towards others of different faiths and beliefs and encourages our pupils to develop their own sense of identity and belonging.
We believe that it is vital for all of our pupils to learn from and about different religions of the world so that they can understand the world around them. Through the study of Religious Education, our pupils develop their knowledge of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism and Hinduism and also their understanding and awareness of the beliefs, values and traditions of other individuals, societies, communities and cultures. Through the teaching of RE, we encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences.
At Lutton St Nicholas Primary Academy, we teach RE using Jigsaw RE, a whole school enquiry led RE programme that explores the major world religions of Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism and makes reference to Humanism. Christianity is taught in every year group, with Christmas and Easter given a fresh treatment every year, developing children's learning in a progressive way. Each unit that the pupils study is introduced through an ‘Enquiry Question’ that is revisited and discussed throughout the term therefore allowing the children to develop their critical thinking skills, reflect on their own thoughts and feelings, develop their knowledge of the major world religions and nurture their spiritual development. Our teaching and learning approach enables pupils to explore, read and or examine information and practical sources to gain an understanding of what it means for people of faith, whilst supporting them to compare and evaluate the connections within the wider community and world for themselves and others.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, children at Lutton St Nicholas Primary Academy are given the fundamental foundations for Religious Education: they understand their place within our community and develop a sensitivity towards the needs of others. Their world view is broadened with the experiences and the comprehension that people are different and that we embrace people who are different to us.
Within the Early Years setting, every child develops their compassion for others. The opportunities that children have to explore the world around them – and the celebrations that take place around the world -sets them upon a path of having cultural, religious and deep tolerance and respect for themselves and for other people.
We believe our RE curriculum supports personal development. Our RE lessons provide valuable and meaningful opportunities for pupils to reflect and consider the opinions and beliefs of others whilst also developing within them respect, tolerance and understanding of others, their faiths and beliefs. Enrichment The teaching and learning in Religious Education is enriched, where possible, through the use of artefacts and visits to religious places of worship.
